Amazing Apple Crumble

I really love a fruity dessert. Now I love chocolate, like real, deep love, but I’d always choose a Lemon Cheesecake over a Chocolate Cheesecake. Apple crumble is an all-time favourite, it reminds me of being a child, but at the same time, I don’t have any clear memories of eating it. (The “Jane” that is sure to comment about all the lovely crumbles I ate in my youth, is my wonderful mother!)

This recipe is a bit different, as it includes oats. I think oats work really well is sweet dishes, this probably stems from my absolute adoration of the chocolate hobnob. King of the biscuits.

You will need:ingredients for apple crumble

  • 4 Bramley Apples
  • 1 Tbsp Water
  • 2 Tbsp Caster Sugar
  • 1 Tsp Cinnamon
  • 100g Plain Flour
  • 75g Butter
  • 50g Oats
  • 100g Caster Sugar

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Peel, core and slice the apples. I hate this part, it always seems to take forever, or I’m a very slow apple cutter. Put them in a large saucepan, with the water, sugar and cinnamon. I’d start with just one spoon of sugar, and add more if you want to. I like mine nice and sweet.  Cook them on a medium heat, stirring regularly for 5-10 minutes, until they start to feel soft.

When they’re ready, put them in a shallow, ovenproof pie dish, spreading evenly, and leave to one side while you make your crumble.

Add the flour and butter to a large mixing bowl, and rub together with your fingers until its breadcrumb…ish. At this point, it’s quite wet and sticky still, so like damp breadcrumbs maybe.

Add the sugar and oats, mix together well with a wooden spoon. This time, it will get more breadcrumb like, make sure there aren’t any large buttery lumps left, and it’s all nice and even.

Layer the crumble on top of the apples, and bake in the oven for 20 minutes, until the top is a nice golden brown.

Serve with custard, cream or ice-cream.

  5. Put apples in a shallow oven proof pie dish
  6. Add flour and butter to a large mixing bowl, rub together with your fingers
  7. Add sugar and oats, stir together well, until like breadcrumbs
  8. Layer over the apples
  9. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, until golden brown
