Easy Homemade Pizza

By | February 25, 2017

I love baking bread, I love cooking from scratch and I love pizza. Yet, for some reason, I have never made my own pizzas. I’ve brought store bases, and then added our own toppings, but I’ve never made the bases myself.

So today, when The Boy said, “Can we have pizza for lunch?” and we didn’t have any, I decided to have a go. And, it was literally the best pizza I’ve ever eaten. It’s easy, healthy, and there are so many different things you can do. I’ll never need to buy pizza again.

This dough recipe will easily make 4 medium bases. I was just making them for me and the kids for lunch, so we’ve frozen the other half of the dough. I’ve also frozen half of the tomato sauce, so we will probably be having pizzas again soon.

You could use any toppings you want. For the kids, I stuck to cheese and tomato, just in case they weren’t sure. But, they both loved it, so I may try different things next time. On mine, I had red onion, red pepper and mozzarella. Because this wasn’t planned and that’s what we had in.

You Will Need

  • 500g Strong white bread flour
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 2 tsp. Caster sugar
  • 7g Instant yeast
  • 325ml Warm water
  • 400g Chopped tomatoes
  • 1 Clove garlic
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp.oil
  • 1 tsp. Mixed herbs
  • Toppings of choice

homemade pizza ingredients

First, you need to make the dough. Put the bread flour in a large mixing bowl, and add the salt, sugar and yeast. Mix together well before adding the water.

Stir as well as you can with a wooden spoon. When it starts to all come together, and there’s not much more you can do, tip it out on to a well-floured surface.

At this point it’s a very sticky dough, so as you’re kneading, you might need to add some more flour to your surface. Knead for 10 minutes, after which it should be a nice smooth dough, that springs back when you poke it.

Cover the dough ball in flour, place in a bowl, and cling film. Leave for 15 minutes.

During this time, start preparing the tomato sauce. Tip the chopped tomatoes into a saucepan, but don’t turn the heat on yet. Finely chop a clove of garlic, and add to the pan. Add 1 tbsp of cooking oil, a tsp of mixed herbs, and a pinch of salt and pepper, stir together well.

When your dough is rested, separate it into 4 equal pieces. Flour a surface, and roll out the dough. For this I kind of just stretch it, pressing it out with my hands. When they’re the shape you want, leave them to rest for 20 minutes.

Now, bring the tomatoes to the boil. Reduce to a simmer, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring frequently. When they have started to soften, press down with a fork, to get rid of any big lumps.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Place the bases on baking trays. Spread with tomato sauce, and add any toppings you would like. I highly recommend mozzarella, which is amazing on pizza. Bake for 15 minutes.
